EBTHub LAB 01 MANAGEMENT KICKOFF — RESEARCH PHASE BEGINS

European Business Transformation Hub launches first enterprise GenAI verification study with full Hub team in place.

What is the Verification Tax — and why should every CEO care?

Before anything else: a plain-language explanation for anyone who has not encountered this term before.

Every time a employee uses a GenAI tool — to draft an email, summarise a document, prepare a report — someone has to check whether the output is correct before it goes anywhere. That checking takes time. Often significantly more time than the AI took to generate the output in the first place.

The Verification Tax is the hidden cost of that checking. If your AI generates an output in 30 seconds and your Senior Finance Manager spends 12 minutes verifying it — the net time saving is negative. You have not saved time. You have moved the work to a different point in the process and added a quality control step that was never budgeted for.

Most organisations do not measure this. They measure how many employees use AI tools. They measure adoption rates. They do not measure whether the time spent verifying AI output is eating the time saved generating it.

Lab 01 at EBTHub measures exactly this — in real European mid-market companies, with real senior practitioners, across four business functions: Sales, Marketing, Finance, and Project Management.

The Kickoff

On 30 April 2026, EBTHub held the Lab 01 management kickoff in Vienna. The full Hub team is now in place and the first research phase begins on 6 May 2026, when the Spoke Contributors — senior domain practitioners from partner companies — join the cycle.

One attendee at the kickoff was Stefi, EBTHub's AI social media agent. Stefi was not on the guest list. She showed up anyway — which is, in hindsight, entirely appropriate for a Lab studying exactly what AI does when humans are not watching closely enough.

The Hub Team

The internal team running the 20-week research cycle:

Ruth Pauline Wachter — Research Lead and CEO of EBTHub. Initiator of the Lab 01 research design.

Verena Mersmann — Research Operations Lead and COO. Responsible for partner company coordination and research execution.

Bernd Walzer — R&D Quality Lead. Ensures methodological standards across all Lab outputs.

David Leroy — PMO & Project Management.

Chris Allstadt — Technical Environment Lead. Responsible for the double-blind testing environment in which GenAI models are evaluated — ensuring that neither participants nor graders know which model produced which output.

Lara Marenich — Lab Assistant. Responsible for meeting documentation and ensuring Spoke Contributors accurately record their time — the raw material without which the Verification Tax cannot be measured.

What the Research Measures

Lab 01 investigates what the research community calls the Verification Paradox: the point at which the time spent verifying AI output exceeds the time the AI saved in generating it. If that point is reached — and in many enterprise workflows, it is — the ROI of GenAI adoption is zero or negative.

The study runs four research strands simultaneously: digital time-capture telemetry to measure generation and verification times without influencing participant behaviour; a validated trust survey instrument; semi-structured interviews with enterprise users; and an embedded multiple case study across three to five partner companies.

All instruments are pre-registered on the Open Science Framework before data collection begins. All methodology is double-blind. All results will be submitted to top-tier Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction journals.

What Partner Companies Receive

Participating organisations receive three proprietary tools developed from the research findings — ahead of public release:

The GenAI Verification ROI Calculator: a parameterised financial model that tells an organisation whether GenAI adoption is saving time in their specific function and industry — or merely relocating the work.

The Enterprise GenAI Quality Rubric (Q-Matrix): a standardised grading framework that allows any employee to assess AI output quality consistently — without needing subject matter expertise in the underlying content.

The Trust Infrastructure Diagnostic: a maturity assessment that identifies whether an organisation's governance architecture is ready to scale GenAI reliably — or whether structural gaps will undermine adoption regardless of tool quality.

CEOs ask us regularly what we are actually doing in our GenAI Labs. What becomes clear every time is that before we answer, they did not know what they did not know about GenAI’s real value for their organisation. That gap — between the promise of AI productivity and the unmeasured cost of verification — is exactly what Lab 01 exists to close.

What Comes Next

On 6 May 2026, the Spoke Contributors — senior practitioners from partner companies across Sales, Marketing, Finance, and Project Management — join the first research session. The 20-week research cycle runs through to November 2026, with no R&D weeks scheduled in August.

Partner company applications remain open for organisations wishing to participate in the study and receive early access to all three research tools.
